Hi, everyone! Lisa, thanks so much for inviting me to share my call story.
I didn’t sell my first novel. No, ah, that one didn’t even come close to selling. I wrote my first book, a category romance aimed for the now gone Yours Truly line at Harlequin/Silhouette. I was eighteen when I wrote this book. Eighteen and absolutely sure I’d written an awesome book. Just so you know…I really hadn’t written an awesome book.
Life came along after that, and I wrote on and off as I finished my degree, got married, and had my son. Writing was always there for me, a great release, a perfect escape. But, it wasn’t until I had my son Jack that I realized—it’s time for me to grab hold of my dream.
I had just attended the big RWA convention in Atlanta, and I kept hearing editors say that they were looking for something big, something hot…so I took a chance and I wrote a sexy werewolf story, one where the werewolf cop was chasing a supernatural serial killer, and one that included a heroine who happened to a psychologist who specialized in treating paranormal patients. My heroine was needed to profile the killer—and, of course, that meant she had to very closely with my wolf cop.
This book, which I gave the title TOUCHING THE DARKNESS, landed me a literary agent (Laura Bradford). Flash forward a bit, and my cell phone rings. Laura calls to tell me that we may have an offer on my story. Yes, please picture me doing a giddy dance. Not too giddy because she did say “may”—but I was still excited. A few days later, another cell phone call came through. This time, Laura wanted to let me know that two fabulous ladies at Kensington were behind my story: Megan Records and Kate Duffy. They wanted to bring me into the Kensington Brava family.
My new dance was very giddy indeed.
Then more calls came. Kate Duffy telephoned me. I think I was shaking the entire time I talked to her. She was Kate Duffy! I’d heard her called the Martha Stewart of Romance. Yes, she intimidated me. She also awed me. Next up…I had the pleasure of talking with Megan Records. Megan was to be my editor—and from the first instant I talked with her, I knew that I had found the perfect person to understand my books. Megan was (is!) smart, funny, and an absolute top-notch editor. Working with her is a pleasure, and I love that she can so effortlessly make my writing better.
So…I guess my story wasn’t about just one call. It was about quite a few calls. My little cell phone was busy those days! I didn’t sell overnight to New York. From the time of my first submission (that 18 year old’s story) to my sale to Kensington Brava, well, that was a whole lot of years.
Though I strayed from my writing path a few times, I always came back to it. Writing is my passion. It’s who I am, not just what I do. And I’m sure glad I found my way back to that path…and that I was lucky enough to receive my calls.
(And by the way, TOUCHING THE DARKNESS got the sexier title of HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT and became the first book in my Midnight Trilogy.)
Thanks for checking out my story!
